Silke Sommer lives in Berlin and loves traveling.
Besides, she is an established costume designer with great experience in a broad variety of settings from opera through theater and ballet as well as cinema, television and art.
Silkes key aim in her work is to truly immerse herself into different times, characters and worlds. With these insights she infuses truth, life, and depth into the movies or performances through costume design. Colleagues appreciate her great enthusiasm and her drive to see and create something beautiful in whatever is.
Silke grew up in the fairytale costume world of her parents. Her family owned a costume studio, with a history of creating costumes for international opera houses, theaters and circuses since 1864.
She holds a degree from the University of the Arts in Berlin. Her creative career started at the costume department of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Schiller Theater Berlin, soon thereafter she was responsible for the costumes of a world tour for the ballet company of Maurice Bejart.
In recent years Silke has focused on domestic and international cinema and television productions as well as art projects, having designed costumes for more than 50 movies from Germany, Spain, Russia and Iran and working with different renowned German and international film directors such as Stefan Krohmer or Marc Rothemund and with famous international artists such as Omer Fast and Maleonn.
In 1999 she has won the prestigious German Television Film Award for Costume Design and quite a few of the films she contributed to have won further prizes, e.g., Best German Children Movie 2015, Adolf Grimmepreis in Gold 2002 and 2004.
